1. VOWEL-LETTERS The original Hebrew alphabet consisted of consonants only ; vowels were not represented in writing.1 Even to-day, the Hebrew Scrolls of the Law which are read in the Synagogues are unpointed, i.e. without vowel-signs.d However, long before the introduction of the vowel-signs it
was felt that the main vowel-sounds should be indicated in writing, and so the three letters "'IH were used to represent the long vowels, thus: H represents â, so that 7\Ľ reads mâ. , represents î and é, so that "'ft reads mí or mé. 1 represents ú and ô, so that 10 reads mů or mô. Because these three letters—"'tH—represent both vowels and letters they are known as VOWEL-LETTERS.
