2- 0PEN AND CLOSED SYLLABLES ' Taking as our example the two-syllabled word ?Oj?a (qă-ţal) the syllable p (qă) ends in a vowel and is said to be open, whereas the syllable 70. (ţal) ends in a consonant and is said to be closed. DEFINITION : An open syllable is one which ends in a vowel, and a closed syllable is one which ends in a consonant. < So that in "TOO (hé-sed) H is open and 10 is closed, and in < * * * D"1S5 (mé-'ä-dám) K $ are open and 01 is closed. Usually an open syllable has a long vowel but, if accented," may have a short vowel. Conversely, a closed syllable usually has a short vowel but, if accented, may have a long vowel.b The importance of this section may be expressed in one rule (which is of special significance, e.g. pp. 12 and 13), namely: A syllable which is CLOSED and UNACCENTED must have a SHORT VOWEL.
