Abstrak sunting
Saya kupas sebuah projek, fetchmail, yang dilaksanakan sebagai ujian teori-teori kejuruteraan perisian yang tidak diduga yang timbul daripada sejarah Linux. Saya bincang teori-teori ini dari segi dua gaya pembangunan yang amat berlainan, model "katedral" yang terdapat dalam bahagian besar dunia komersial lawan model "bazar" dalam dunia Linux. Saya tunjukkan yang model-model ini timbul daripada tanggapan-tanggapan yang bertentangan tentang ciri-ciri tugas penyahpepijatan. Kemudian saya buat hujah daripada pengelaman Linux yang menyokong usulan yang "Apabila ramai yang memeriksa, semua pepijat kelihatan cetek", mencadang perbandingan produktif dengan sistem-sistem agen kendiri yang membetulkan keadaan sendiri, dan mengakhiri buku dengan sedikit pemeriksaan terhadap implikasi-implikasi pemerhatian terhadap masa hadapan perisian.
